Whilst the original BOUNTY design may have suffered from lack of space below decks, MAHINI's additional pilot house provides for an 'airy' saloon area over the engine room and makes way for an extra guest cabin, useful should chartering be a consideration. Other features below decks include a focsail cabin for use as an extra cabin or workshop / utility area.
The owners cabin includes an en-suite shower and head, adjoining an open plan galley and main cabin. Further aft, a large navigation station is situated opposite the main head before ascending 3 steps into the pilothouse. In the lazarette area, full use has been made of the space to provide a small aft cabin with 2 comfortable sea berths.
Construction originally began in Wooden Boats shipyard in Cebu, Philippines, in 1986 , alongside several other yachts that were being built or renovated. The owner of the yard, a New Zealand boat builder, spent all of his spare time building his own "dream" yacht, using the best of the local craftsmen and exotic hardwoods for the construction. Such was the attention to detail and craftsmanship, that an incredible 180,000 hours of labour was invested in this yacht. Some of the wood, such as the Burmese teak deck .was imported, together with nearly all the materials such as epoxies, paints, hardware and equipment from Australia, Europe and the U.S.A.
The next owner, who supervised the final stages of construction, fitting-out and rigging, took over the yard at the end of 1989. MAHINI was launched in December 1990 and began sea trials in the Philippine islands in June, before embarking on her first major voyage of 8000 miles (mostly to windward) across the Pacific to San Francisco. She arrived in October, coming through the test with flying colours. Her final passage from Micronesia of 39 days included several gales and proved how well suited she is to long distance sailing.
After completing the voyage and carrying out a few modifications and some cosmetic work such as varnishing, the original owner had a change of plans and decided to put MAHINI up for sale.
The current owner purchased Mahini in April of 1992 and has lived aboard the vessel since. In 1996, the vessel chartered and passaged the Pacific and is now at Southport on the Queensland Gold Coast in Australia.
