Laptops and iPad type devices are perfect for general computer applications but they may fall short of meeting the requirement of vessel monitoring, control and navigation applications. Where very low power consumption and daylight viewable displays are required, Embedded systems products will be the best choice.
The embedded system will have a monitor permantly mounted on a dash or navigation panel fascia. The computer is mounted behind the fascia where it connects to the various interface devices. Characteristics to look for include:
Low Power Consumption - the system components may need to operate on a 24/7 basis. Devices will operate on minimal power and have flexible standby power options. The most efficient power connection is direct to the vessel/vehicle battery. However these batteries are not a constant 12 volt. The devices need to have a wide voltage range of operation. Otherwise some type of regulating power adapter will be required.
Adequate Performance - a system that operates at the higher end of the performance curve will also consume more power. The system should be fast enough to do the job but not much more.
Connectivity - USB is the predominant connection for peripheral devices. A minimum of 4 USB ports will be required. Ethernet and wireless capability is also required.
Flexible Screen Brightness - dash fascias are often located in a high ambient light area by day and low lighting conditions by night. The best screens will have automatic brightness control ranging from daylight viewable to a low backlight compatible with good night vision.
Touch Screen Monitor - used as an alternative to a mouse input.
Remote Capability - local and wide area network connectivity is important for remote system access. The system will have wireless connection to the internet and local wireless routing capability. The router too should have low power characteristics for 24/7 operation.
