An AC ammeter actually measures the current in the secondary side of a current coil. This means that the high current being measured is kept in the location of the coil and the secondary much lower current is wired to the ammeter in a remote location.

Most current coils have a 50 milliamp full scale output that corresponds to a current that matches the meter full scale.
