Wind generators convert energy from the wind to electrical power and require a charge controller to regulate the output voltage to a suitable level.
The type of regulator is an important factor when choosing a wind generator for marine mobile use. Rutland exclusively use "series" type regulators. They provide true regulation of the battery charge voltage at all times. They also feature an inbuilt capability to prevent the generator from overspeeding in severe wind conditions and have a facility for a stop switch.
Other manufacturers use "shunt" regulators that rely on a dummy load to dump excess power when the batteries are at a specific voltage. We consider these systems incompatible with other charging systems on the vessel.
Other than a mouting pole, Rutland wind generators offer a complete solution with the regulator included.
